About Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Churches
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) traces its founding to Saxon Lutheran immigrants who arrived in Missouri in 1839 fleeing theological rationalism in Germany. Under C.F.W. Walther, the Missouri Synod committed itself to the Lutheran Confessions — the Augsburg Confession, Luther's Catechisms, and the Formula of Concord, gathered in the Book of Concord (1580) — as binding expositions of Scripture. That confessional commitment remains the LCMS's defining characteristic.

LCMS theology is Confessional Lutheran: justification by grace alone, through faith alone, as revealed in Scripture alone. Luther's Law-Gospel distinction shapes LCMS preaching and catechesis. The LCMS holds a high view of biblical inerrancy. The sacraments are genuine means of grace: Baptism works regeneration, and the Lord's Supper involves the real bodily presence of Christ 'in, with, and under' the bread and wine. The LCMS practices close communion — the Supper is offered to those in confessional and ecclesial unity with the Synod.
Governance is synodal: self-governing congregations voluntarily associate under a Synod providing theological oversight and missions coordination. The Synod President and Council of Presidents provide pastoral leadership without diocesan authority over individual congregations.
The LCMS has approximately 1.7–1.8 million members in roughly 6,000 congregations, concentrated in the Midwest — Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. The Synod operates one of the largest Protestant parochial school systems in the country and two seminaries (St. Louis and Fort Wayne).
A visitor will encounter a liturgical Divine Service from the Lutheran Service Book, with the Kyrie, Gloria, appointed Scripture readings, Nicene Creed, substantive sermon, and Eucharist. Traditional Lutheran chorales predominate. Congregations participate actively in spoken and sung liturgical responses. The atmosphere is reverent and theologically serious. Lutheranism's educational tradition — Luther himself was a professor — continues in the LCMS's emphasis on catechesis, confirmation instruction, and lay theological formation.

Common Questions About Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Churches
- What is 'close communion' and why does the LCMS practice it?
- Close communion means the LCMS offers the Lord's Supper only to those who share the Synod's confessional teaching on the Lord's Supper — specifically, the real bodily presence of Christ 'in, with, and under' the bread and wine. The LCMS holds that to receive Communion is to publicly confess agreement with the church's teaching, and that offering it to those who hold a different theology (e.g. that it is symbolic) would misrepresent their actual beliefs. If you are visiting an LCMS church and are not a member of an LCMS congregation, the bulletin will typically explain this practice, and you are warmly welcome to attend the service and receive a blessing rather than the Sacrament.
- What is the Lutheran parochial school system?
- The LCMS operates one of the largest Protestant private school systems in the United States, with hundreds of elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools affiliated with local congregations. Lutheran parochial schools integrate Christian faith and theology across all academic subjects alongside standard curriculum. Enrollment is typically open to families outside the congregation, not just LCMS members.
