About Episcopal Churches
The Episcopal Church (TEC) is the U.S. member church of the worldwide Anglican Communion — a fellowship of approximately 85 million Christians whose roots trace to the Church of England. After American independence, Anglicans reconstituted themselves as the Episcopal Church at a 1789 convention in Philadelphia.

Anglicanism is defined by three authorities held in tension: Scripture, tradition, and reason. The Book of Common Prayer (BCP), first compiled in 1549 and substantially revised in the current U.S. 1979 edition, governs the liturgy. Anglican theology occupies a deliberately 'via media' — a middle way between Roman Catholicism and continental Protestantism — maintaining an episcopal structure and sacramental theology while affirming the sufficiency of Scripture.
