Is every Southern Baptist church the same?

No. Southern Baptist churches are fully autonomous — each congregation calls its own pastor, owns its own property, and determines its own practices. The SBC provides cooperative infrastructure for missions and seminary education, but it has no authority over local church governance. This means worship style, community programming, and even minor doctrinal emphases can differ significantly between two SBC congregations in the same city. Looking at a church's own website and visiting in person tells you far more than the denominational label.

What is Sunday School in a Southern Baptist church?

Sunday School is a small-group Bible study that typically meets before or after the main worship service. It's organized by age (children's classes, youth groups, young adult classes, married couples, senior adults) and serves as the primary community and discipleship context in most SBC churches — not just a class for children. Many long-term members of Southern Baptist churches say that Sunday School is where they actually built lasting friendships and grew in their faith.

How does the Southern Baptist Cooperative Program work?

The Cooperative Program is the SBC's funding mechanism for missions and ministry beyond the local church. Each affiliated congregation voluntarily sends a percentage of its undesignated offerings to the state convention, which pools funds with other churches and channels a portion to the SBC Executive Committee. Those dollars fund the International Mission Board (global missionaries), the North American Mission Board (domestic church planting), six seminaries, and other SBC entities. It's the largest unified missions funding system in Protestant Christianity.

About Southern Baptist Convention Churches

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) was organized in Augusta, Georgia, in 1845, when Southern churches separated from the Triennial Convention primarily over the question of whether slaveholders could be appointed as missionaries — a founding wound the Convention formally acknowledged and repented of in a 1995 resolution. It has grown into the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, though membership has declined for nearly two decades — from a 2006 peak near 16.3 million to approximately 12 million today across roughly 47,000 churches.

The 2000 Baptist Faith and Message (BFM 2000) serves as the SBC's confessional statement, affirming the full inerrancy and authority of Scripture, salvation by grace through faith alone in Christ alone, and the priesthood of all believers. Baptism by full immersion of professing believers is non-negotiable, understood as a public declaration of faith rather than a sacrament conveying grace. The Lord's Supper is observed as a memorial ordinance.

Governance is explicitly congregational. Each local church is fully autonomous: it owns its property, calls its own pastor, and determines its own policies. The SBC functions as a cooperative fellowship for missions (the International Mission Board deploys approximately 3,500 missionaries globally), theological education (six seminaries), and ministry resources — not as a governing body over local churches.

SBC churches are heavily concentrated in the South — Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and the Carolinas — but the denomination has planted churches across every state. A visitor will typically encounter contemporary praise-and-worship music followed by a 30–45 minute expository or topical sermon. Sunday School is a hallmark. Services are warm and evangelistically oriented.

The SBC has faced high-profile controversies in recent years, including a major 2021–2022 independent investigation into sexual abuse and ongoing debates over women in pastoral ministry, Critical Race Theory, and soteriology. The denomination processes these tensions through its democratic convention structure rather than formal schism.
