General guidance · African Methodist Episcopal (AME) churches · not specific to Metropolitan AME Church
Liturgical elements blended with contemporary worship, thoughtful sermon-based teaching, and active community outreach programs. A strong emphasis on social justice and service.
Methodist churches are known for their inclusive, grace-centered welcome. John Wesley's motto of 'open hearts, open minds, open doors' reflects the spirit you'll find here.
What Methodist churches generally believe
Methodists believe in the Trinity, Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died and rose again, and the Bible as God's Word, with Scripture as the primary authority, understood alongside tradition, reason and experience. Rooted in John Wesley's 18th-century revival, Methodism stresses God's grace offered to everyone, a personal response of faith, and growth in holiness. Infants and adults are baptised, and communion is usually open to all who seek Christ.
Compared with Catholics: Methodists also baptise infants, follow the church year, and many have bishops, but recognise two sacraments rather than seven and do not look to the Pope. Among Protestants they sit between liturgical churches (Lutheran, Anglican) and free-church evangelicals.
